My name is Beverly Keane. I have been teaching Science Lab for over twenty years. I see myself as a curator of STEM learning experiences and a facilitator of constructivist learning projects. I hold a BA in Elementary Education, an MA in Curriculum and Instruction and an MA in Educational Leadership as well as a graduate certificate in STEM and educational technology. I have a Professional Educators License as well as an Administrative License. I enjoy learning and am currently enrolled in the Michigan State University Wipro Urban STEM Fellowship Program. In this program I am learning about educational technology and pedagogical practices and theory, as well as science and math content. I am also learning how to utilize technology in the classroom in a meaningful way. This program is very challenging and I am learning many valuable skills. It is an honor and a privilege to be selected to participate in this useful and challenging program.
Currently, I work at Mark Sheridan Academy in Chicago. I work with students from kindergarten through eighth grade. I specialize in hands-on kinesthetic learning experiences and all lessons are linked to the NGSS (Next Generation Science Standards) and the CPS – CAS (Chicago Public Schools Framework of Academic Standards.)
It is a privilege as well as a pleasure to teach at Mark Sheridan Academy. Mark Sheridan Academy is located on the south side of Chicago and has a diverse population of students from all cultures and backgrounds. The students are model citizens and students. I curate my lessons to meet the state standards as well as the needs of this diverse population of learners. The administrative and teaching staff at the school are supportive and professional. Our parents are active and involved in positive ways. Mark Sheridan Academy has an outdoor learning area that contains raised garden beds for grades kindergarten to fifth grade as well as a perennial garden that runs the perimeter of the schoolyard. I wrote and received a grant for this garden from Openlands a Chicago area non-profit organization dedicated to preserving and constructing green space in urban areas. I enjoy gardening and can frequently be found in the garden with my students. Students enjoy gardening and watching the seeds they plant come to fruition. Students plan the garden beds as teams each year selecting a new theme. Sometimes the garden theme is tied to a book they have read or a math concept they are exploring. Students map out their gardens measuring in the units they have selected and then plant seeds related to the theme of their choice. Students care for the garden the during school year and students and their families care for the garden during breaks.
I have received many honors, grants, and awards throughout my career. However my highest honor in education are the notes and visits that I receive from my current and former students and their parents. One of my best teaching experiences came when two of my former students who were in their senior year of high school asked if they could work with me to teach an after school STEM learning program. I agreed and teaching with these students was an experience that I will always treasure. Another proud moment came from coaching Mark Sheridan Academy’s You Be the Chemist Program. This is a nation-wide competitive chemistry event. Our team came in first place in Chicago. This was a first ever win for our school and our student team members and school received many prizes.
Another program I am proud to be associated with was the Generals Motors sponsored Environmental Learning Challenge. Our students created projects that were related to environmental concerns. We won first place and received a school visit from Bill Nye the Science Guy and also a free field trip and prizes. I am a grateful educator and learner and pleased and privileged to be a part of the Mark Sheridan Community.
About me personally; my greatest gratification in life comes from being a proud mother of three and a grandmother of four marvelous grandchildren. I also like to travel, garden, bike, hike, kayak, knit and read.
